SAS Saldanha training camp
Players and coaches reported to SAS Saldanha Navy Base for a rugby training camp over period 15 – 17 February 2013, two weeks before the start of the pre-season warm up matches.
The aim of having the camp facilitated by SA Navy PTI’s was to familiarise the players with the military environment and teach them the principles of respecting each other and the sport. This also presented the opportunity to strengthen the bond and discipline amongst the players and to promote principles of team work which is emanated through out the SA Navy.

The PTIs awarded Roland Fransman as the Fittest Player, Raithby Universals's 1st team winger. The Head Instructor, PO April, saw this as an opportunity and invited Roland out for one-on-one training.

When the rugby players arrived at SAS Saldanha the physical training instructors (PTI) were ready for them and the camp was kicked off with a fitness test to monitor players’ levels of fitness. It was straight off the bus for a quick briefing then onto the training pitch and into the gym.
The following morning they went for a morning run followed by a team based obstacle course. Players covered a distance of 16km in two teams carrying the navy training tyres, sand bags and what is known as a 'Management Tool'.

Later that afternoon they went to the pool for the swimming pool exercise which was the last exercise for the day on the programme. The pool session was closed off with the endurance testing "crab-walk", which the players couldn't wait to take back to their fellow team mates who could not make the camp.
The players completed their camp on the Sunday with another obstacle course and thanks to SAS Saldanha’s contribution and the players’ dedication the camp was a big success.
